AI is talked about constantly — in the news, in schools, in political debates. But for most parents, the honest question is a simple one: what actually is it?
Not the science fiction version. Not the chatbot version. The real, everyday version that is already shaping what our children see, hear, read, and believe.
AI is not one thing. It is a family of tools that learn from examples and use what they have learned to make predictions.
What AI actually is
At its core, AI is software that learns from large amounts of data and uses that learning to make decisions or generate outputs.
A simple way to think about it: instead of a programmer writing every rule manually — "if someone searches for X, show Y" — an AI system is shown millions of examples and figures out the rules itself.
A useful analogy
Teaching a child to recognise a dog. You do not explain the exact anatomy of every breed. You show them pictures. Enough pictures, and they can identify a dog they have never seen before.
AI learns the same way — from examples, at enormous scale, very fast.
This ability to learn from data and make predictions is what makes AI so powerful — and so widely used.
Where children encounter AI every day
AI is not a future technology. It is already embedded in the tools children use daily — most of the time invisibly.
AI decides which posts, videos and accounts to show them, in what order, and how long to keep them watching.
AI determines which pages rank highest and increasingly generates summary answers directly — without the child clicking anywhere.
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others use AI to generate text, explanations, essays and answers in response to questions.
Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant use AI to understand spoken language and generate responses.
The face filters on Snapchat and Instagram use AI to detect and transform faces in real time.
AI controls non player characters, adapts difficulty levels and in some cases generates in game content on the fly.
The predictive text on a phone keyboard uses AI to guess the next word.
AI is used to decide which ads to show to which child, at which moment, on which platform.
By the time a child sits down to do homework with an AI tool, they have already encountered AI dozens of times that day without noticing.

One of the most useful things a parent can teach is honest expectations — not fear, not uncritical enthusiasm.

AI and homework: a practical framework
Most schools are still working out their policies. Most children are already using AI tools, whether schools know it or not. Rather than banning it outright — which rarely works — it helps to give children a clear framework for how to use it honestly.
Using AI to understand a topic
Fine — similar to reading an explanation online.
Using AI to plan or brainstorm
Fine — similar to talking through ideas with someone.
Using AI to check your own work
Fine — similar to using a spell-checker.
Using AI to produce a first draft and then editing it
Grey area — depends on the task and the school policy.
Using AI to write the work and submitting it as your own
Not fine — this is the line.
AI can support thinking. It doesn't have to replace it. The hope is a child who uses the tool — not one who's used by it.
